Hiking and monkeys, whales and Turtle Island

Sunday morning we got up super early and headed for Cabo Blanco, where we spent 2 hours hiking through Costa Rica´s first natural reserve.  It was a gorgeous hike, especially so early in the morning (also much cooler than later).  We didn´t see a ton of wildlife, but we did see a bunch of monkeys! I don´t think they were thrilled with us being there and were throwing little fruits down at us from the trees.  It was SO cool to see monkeys in real life in the wild though!! One of them got within probably 10 yards of us and I got a pretty good picture of it, which I´ll post later.  The end of the hike was this absolutely pristine, beautiful remote beach.  We spent a couple hours there, made some PB&J sandwiches (oooooh, how good they were!!), then hiked back to where Sergio picked us up.  We got back, everyone took a looooong nap (it was quite the exhausting hike! especially for me carrying the big pack with most of the food and water and beach stuff...)

Monday we did an all day tour out to Isla Tortuga (Turtle Island).  I think this was one of my favorite parts of the weekend.  We took a 45 minute boat ride and saw some humpback whales on the way to the island.  There was a mom and a calf, and we got within about 20 yards of them, which was so awesome. Being on the ocean, especially out on a boat, is one of the best most peaceful things for me, and I have always loved marine life, especially whales. (You can ask my dad--when we go fishing in Alaska, as soon as we sight whales I´m done fishing for awhile so I can watch the whales Ü)  We snorkeled for an hour or so then spent the day on the beach.  The tour guides prepared us this awesome lunch of fruit and bread and barbequed fish. It was so tasty!  There´s a little gift shop on the island (welcome to the most touristy country in Central America...even the remote islands have gift shops), and there´s an island pig that came into the shop in the afternoon and just plopped himself right down on the ground next to the t-shirts and took a snooze! It was a pretty funny sight to see.

There were four other people on the tour with us--one guy from Eugene, Oregon, and three guys from the Canary Islands!  Later that night when we got back and were having dinner, the guys from the Canary Islands walked past the restaurant we were eating at.  We talked with them for a bit more then met up with them at Chico´s (the bar) for a drink later. They were very fun to talk to and very interesting. And pretty cool to be able to say I´ve met people from the Canary Islands!

Tuesday ended our Costa Rican adventure, but I was ready by that point to come back to Managua. It was a great trip but I needed to get some space and time away from the boys---they are fun guys, but after spending 24 hours a day with anyone for 5 days straight, I need me some space!  Another long 12 hour traveling day, and I was very relieved to be back.

I will add pictures soon!
