El Cine, Church, and new friends

Classes start tomorrow! Woo-hoo! I think I’m more nervous for this first day of school than any other I can remember. I’m sure it will go well, though. I had a wonderful weekend. Saturday I read most of the day, and made my picture collage, and hung out with Ligia and Maria Valeria. Valtteri and I decided to go to the movies after dinner that night, so we called Greer (one of the exchange students at the other university) to see if they wanted to join. They were also planning on going to see something, so we met her there, along with William and Colleen (the other 2 exchange students besides Brendan). We saw Milk, a movie with Sean Penn and James Franco (great acting) about the gay rights movement in the 1970s in San Francisco (and the rest of the country). It was pretty interesting and eye opening, regardless of anyone’s personal opinions about homosexuality.

Yesterday I went to a church called International Christian Fellowship. Most of the people who go there are missionary families or Christian business people, and the service was in English. One of the camp staff I worked with in the Dominican Republic gave me his friend Jeff’s name, who works with Young Life (Vida Joven) here in Managua. I had called Jeff Saturday and planned to meet them at church. When I got out of the taxi, a blonde girl was waiting outside and asked if I was Aly. She’s Jeff’s daughter, Kate, and is my same age. The family is from Michigan and has lived in Nicaragua for 3 years. Kate’s middle sister, Anna, is going to college in Michigan, and the youngest, Olivia is a senior here at the Christian Academy. After church, the Greenways invited me to their home for brunch (American food without a Nicaraguan twist!) and I ended up spending the whole afternoon with them. Making friends with Kate was wonderful, and hopefully I’ll get to spend more time with her, although they live so far on the other side of town that the taxi ride was $10, which is quite expensive, (in Nica terms, anyways) and I don’t know how often I’ll want to pay $20 for the taxi!

The heat here kinda sucks…it’s muggy ALL the time, and my room never seems to cool down. I think I’m starting to get used to it, sort of, but it’s more a mindset of accepting the fact that you’re always going to be hot and sticky. Never thought I’d say this, but thank the Lord for cold showers!!!

Hey Aly,
So glad things are going well down there so far besides the whole heat and stickiness. Good luck with your first day of school, we will be thinking about you! Take care.
